MEMO FOR DONORS

What is donated blood for?

Blood is the body's internal environment and is a living, self-regulating system and is constantly updated. The adult human body contains 4.0-5.5 liters of blood (5-7% of body weight).

The ancient people knew that the blood is the bearer of life. The main function of the blood  is  the transfer of nutrients and protective agents, which help to maintain the vital activity of organs and tissues of the human body. Depending on the nature of the substances carried by the blood there are following functions:

  1. Transportational transfer of various substances: oxygen and carbon dioxide (respiratory); nutrients, hormones, electrolytes, enzymes (trophic); transport of  the end products of metabolism and toxins to the organs of excretion (excretory).
  2. Thermoregulatory - transfer of heat from hotter organs to less heated.
  3. Safety - Implementation of non-specific and specific immunity; blood clotting at the site of damage to prevent blood loss when  trauma.
  4. Regulatory (humoral) - delivery of hormones and other biologically active substances from the places of their formation to the adjustable cells and tissues of the body.
  5. Homeostatic - Maintaining constant internal environment.

From the history

The great ancient physician Hippocrates recommended seriously ill people to drink the blood of, healthy people. In ancient Rome the patricians to rejuvenate drank the blood of dying gladiators.

In the Middle Ages attempts to treat patients with blood continued. In 1667, the personal physician of King Louis XIV of France, Jacques Batiste Deni made the first successful blood transfusion of lamb (about 270 ml) to the patient.

First blood transfusion from one person to another in 1818  made a London professor of obstetrics and gynecology James Blundell using a special apparatus.

In 1832, the St. Petersburg obstetrician Andrew Martynovich Wolf using Blundell’s machine, made the first operation on the blood transfusion to a woman with postpartum hemorrhage from her husband - first blood donor in Russia.

Since the late 30-ies of the last century, blood transfusions or some of its factions has become widespread in medicine.

Modern development of Transfusion

Transfusion -  blood and its components transfusion science. Today, the main indication for the use of blood components for therapeutic purposes is a shortage of cells or blood plasma proteins, i.e, only recognized substitutive effect of blood components. The basic principle of modern clinical transfusion is  the rational use of blood components and products for the indications, taking into account the characteristics of the disease and the therapeutic properties of transfused blood component. Most people suffering from anemia, need only erythrocytes (red blood cells); leukemia patients require platelets; hemophiliacs need certain plasma proteins - blood clotting factors. Of a single dose of donor blood can be allocated various blood components (red blood cells, platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate). From the human blood plasma additionally obtain drugs (albumin, thrombin, immunoglobulins, blood coagulation factors) and diagnostic reagents (hemagglutinating serum standard erythrocytes etc.).

Modern medicine is advancing. Currently, at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center (RSPC) in our country are held replacement arthroplasty surgeries, transplantation of organs and tissues, reconstructive surgeries. They all require a large number of red cells, platelet concentrates, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate. In the city of Minsk, the main consumers of blood components are: the Centre of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology, the Centre of traumatology and orthopedics, the Centre of Oncology and Medical Radiology, RSPC "Cardiology", RSPC "Mother and Child", the Republican Center of transplantation of organs and tissues on the basis of HCI '9th Clinical Hospital of Minsk. "

In modern society, a blood transfusion is necessary during the life of every three people. At any moment you , your family or friends might need the blood. That is why we need donors - healthy people, that are willing to give a small (500 ml)number of their own blood to help patients. The obtained blood components are most  needed by: patients undergoing heart, lung, spine, gastrointestinal tract surgery; persons affected by accidents and emergencies; women-mothers and their born children ;cancer patients in need of surgery and chemotherapy.

That is why blood donors are highly respected in the community and get the word infinite gratitude of hundreds of thousands of patients with transfused blood components, or drugs derived from donated blood.

About the benefits of donation and its components

Donated blood is the only remedy, which today can not be replaced by other drugs. Therefore, in many countries, the maintenance of blood donation is a part of the state policy in the field of health.

It has long been known that the erythrocytes, plasma and platelets, which make up the blood, have a therapeutic effect on the patients. The components of the blood are constantly in need of patients with oncological pathology, trauma, diseases of the blood, heart, liver, lungs, as well as patients who have undergone surgery, and so on.

In recent years, it is shown that donors who donate blood regularly or its components, contribute to improving their own health.

It is well known that the blood that passes the donor has the ability to recover. In these plasma proteins that are lost during plasmapheresis, and, to a lesser extent, when giving a dose (450 ml) of blood, are completely restored in 3-5 days. Platelets and white blood cells, the loss of which takes place during any blood or blood components donation, are restored within 3-7 days. Red blood cells are restored longer than other blood cells: 1,5-2 months, and hence the longer intervals between donations -2 months.

Updating of blood cells and proteins occur regularly and does not depend on whether you hand over blood or not. In the human body  constantly occur two processes :the destruction of the already time moribund molecules  and cells and creating new ones. Theman, who is not a donor, makes his body to destroy the "old" cells and molecules, and donors who donate blood and its components regularly,  relieve thier bodies fromthis ongoing work, and, in addition, activate the processes of renewal (regeneration).

The latter circumstance leads to the fact that over the years in the body of the donor is less accumulated toxins. It is with these doctors attributed the fact that donors who donate blood regularly reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease (such as myocardial infarction and stroke), which are the leading cause of death in the Republic of Belarus.

Activation of cell and molecules regeneration ( renewal) is crucial to the health status of the donor's lifetime. In 2007, doctors in Denmark and Sweden conducted a survey of 1,110,329 donors who regularly (10-25 times) donated blood for 6-12 years. The study found that donors, in contrast to the population in these countries, in average, died 3 times less from diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, endocrine diseases, blood diseases, diseases of the joints and muscles. 2 times less blood donors dyied from infections, diseases of the kidney and urinary tract, diseases of the lungs and gastrointestinal tract, nervous system diseases. Mortality of donors  was lower for 25-30% from cardiovascular diseases and cancer, compared with the average number of the population in Denmark and Sweden.

This is due to the fact that any disease occurs in two stages: the first - the destruction / inflammation, the second - recovery / regeneration. If the first stage of the disease, mostly depends on the quality of medicines and medical treatment,  the second stage - from the body of the patient. That is why blood donors have a better chance to recover faster and be healthier than those who have never donated blood, was not a donor of blood and its components.

There is another reason that makes blood donor more healthy than those who do not donate blood and its components. Regular medical examinations and laboratory tests allow you to be confident in your health. If there are signs of any disease you are not allowed to donate blood and that is why 25% of the donors are not allowed to donations.

Unpaid donors are the pride of Belarus

At the Baranovichy city blood transfusion station to donate blood or blood components for free (hereinafter - the donation) can citizens who have a residence permit or registration in Baranovichi city or Baranovichi district for at least 6 months, in age from 18 to 60 years, not suffering from diseases when donation is contraindicated, weighing at least 55 kg.
